GENI & KEBE sharing lessons from the OHADA states with the Islamic Development Bank

The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is an international financial institution with 56 member countries that fosters economic development and social progress of member countries and more broadly.
In June, GENI & KEBE partners Mouhamed Kebe and Dr Aboubacar Fall delivered a seminar at the headquarters of IDB in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia under the chairmanship of Mr. Mansour A. Noibi, the Director of the Legal Department. The event was attended by the staff of the Legal Department, including legal counsel and managers.

The topics for discussion ranged from OHADA law, land issues and Islamic finance.  Islamic finance refers to banking practices that are consistent with Shari'ah (Islamic) law, which includes limitations on accepting specific interest or fees for loans of money and prohibitions on investments in activities that are contrary to Islamic principles (such as pork or alcohol).
“There are particular development opportunities and challenges for the IDB, which conducts its business in compliance with two sets of laws – the law of the country in which it is operating and the laws of Islamic financing,” commented Dr Aboubacar Fall.  “A number of the member states of the IDB are member states of OHADA, so this was an excellent opportunity to discuss the how best to work within these legal systems and learn more about the IDB’s projects and impact in the region.”
“This was a great opportunity for us to learn more about the OHADA system,” commented Mr Noibi  “and to shed light on the legal challenges for IDB developmental activities in the region.”
